Maison Moussié
A cooperage that has recently made its way into our premium barrel segment. During a very insightful presentation by the founder, Thomas Moussié, we were convinced by the tonneaux and the new toasting technology.
Noventhique luxury barrels
The barriques from Maison Moussié combine authenticity and innovation with the utmost elegance. They are designed to protect the identity of the wine and allow the pure expression of the fruit.
Born from the avant-garde approach of founder Thomas Moussié, Maison Moussié’s technology and expertise supports our customers’ desires and the ever-evolving wine styles. From the origin and aging of the oak to the selection of porosity and the toasting process, every detail contributes to barrels of the highest refinement.
Petra Collection
Petra combines Maison Moussié’s strict requirements for wood origin and grain with their heated-stone toasting technology. This creates a barrel that enhances the fruit, finesse, and elegance of the finished wine while minimizing the impact of the oak.
Innovative Toasting Technology
Petra tonneaux are toasted using a patented hot-stone technology. This combustion-free process uses natural stones and water elements in combination with heat to create evenly toasted barrels.
Electrical conductors transfer heat through direct contact with carefully selected natural stones. This heat energy is transferred from the stones to the barrel staves. Additionally, convective heat generates water, which is sprayed at intervals during the toasting process, transforming into steam and circulating hot air to increase the temperature between the toasting machine and the staves.
Selection of Natural Stones
The selection of stones from the earth adds another natural element to our process. The stones currently offered include lava and natural jade. Lava stones were initially chosen for their heat absorption and transfer properties, as well as their beauty and form. Through their research, they found that natural jade is another successful option, adding additional elegant qualities to the finished wine.
Maison Moussié barriques are offered with a classic fire toast or within the Petra Collection.
Classic Collection
The Classic Collection offers high-quality oak barrels with a very fine selection of wood origin and grain structure. These fire-toasted barrels are made in both traditional and large formats up to 600 l.

Pure Origins – 36 Months – Excellence Grain
The Excellence barrel uses the finest materials in every detail. This barrel is made from oak with excellent porosity (from 0.1 to 1 mm) from the forests of Tronçais, Bertranges, and Bercé, resulting in a perfectly balanced mix of woods. Conclusion by Sibylle Eder:
Maison Moussié cooperage is breaking new ground with its toasting process, delivering excellence while tapping into the spirit of the times.
Not overly heavy, but characterful, smooth, and elegant wines are the essence of today’s trends.
The fine wood selection, combined with an indirect and therefore fresher toasting over minerals, avoids overwhelming the wine with roasted aromas and heaviness, instead highlighting the grape variety’s characteristics in a way that makes it even more intriguing.

My initial conclusion:
The barrels are very well-suited for long barrel aging without the barrel itself taking center stage. Fruit and terroir clearly benefit from the development within the barrel.
Even in the first fill, the barrels support the wine’s development in a very elegant way. The barrels fit perfectly with the current style that some wineries are already practicing.
